Neben Alexis Korner (auf den komme ich noch zu sprechen) war John Mayall der Vater des britischen Blues. Die Karriere eines Eric Clapton wäre ohne Mayall sicherlich anders verlaufen. Clapton war nur einer seiner erfolgreichen Schüler. Und auch die Laufbahn der Gruppe ‚Jethro Tull‘ mit Ian Anderson ist in der bekannten Form kaum denkbar. Das erste Album von ‚Jethro Tull‘ war überwiegend eine Blues-Scheibe – gewissermaßen im Windschatten von John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Anderson entschied sich damals für die Querflöte, weil er sich sicher war, niemals so Gitarre spielen zu können wie Clapton. Ein dickes Kompliment.

John Mayall (1933 – 2024)

Am Montag, den 22.07.2024, ist John Mayall, der noch vor zwei Jahren mit 88 Jahren ein Album herausbrachte, mit 90 Jahren gestorben. Alongside Alexis Korner, John Mayall was the father of British blues. Eric Clapton’s career would certainly have been different without Mayall. Clapton was just one of his successful students. And the career of the group ‚Jethro Tull‘ with Ian Anderson is also hardly conceivable in the form we know it. The first album by ‚Jethro Tull‘ was mainly a blues record – in the slipstream of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, so to speak. Anderson decided to play the flute because he was sure he would never be able to play the guitar like Clapton. A huge compliment.

On Monday (22nd July 2024) , John Mayall, who released an album just two years ago at the age of 88, died at the age of 90.
